Birmingham’s a good position for foodies.

We have amazing restaurants…like Highland Bar & Grill, El Barrio, Automatic Seafood, and Helen.

There have been other fantastic places to eat previous or present, but in my coronary heart and tummy, none compare to an American Chinese Restaurant that opened in 1919 and operated effectively typically in downtown Birmingham for about 70 several years.

The title of the cafe was Joy Youthful and I ate hundreds of meals there in my youth and younger grownup yrs.

According to BhamWiki, “In Oct 1925 the cafe moved to 412 20th Road North opposite the Tutwiler Lodge, shortly expanding into the previous store subsequent door. The proprietor Mansion Joe, and manager Henry Bathroom, experienced earned reputations as welcoming, generous businessmen, in some cases assisting offer foods to the needy. That status served them very well as the Ku Klux Klan uncovered no guidance from the general public in attempts to generate the cafe out of company.”

When I was expanding up in the ‘50′s, our household often ate at Pleasure Youthful on Sundays and special situations. Certainly when out-of-city loved ones arrived to city, we collected there.

It uniquely showcased both of those American and Chinese meals. And even while I favored Chinese, I normally purchased the 1/2 fried hen meal. To this working day, it is the greatest fried chicken I at any time tasted. I purchased my dinner with a shrimp cocktail, fries, English peas, yeast rolls, and a slice of scrumptious caramel pie for dessert. Consider it or not, the shrimp and pie had been bundled in the selling price. Many prospects beloved their homemade almond cookies.

My family lived on the Southside of Birmingham and when I was old more than enough to experience the bus by myself, I took the #12 Highland Avenue bus downtown to satisfy my good friends. We would go to Joy Younger for lunch and then to a motion picture at the Alabama, Ritz, Melba, or Empire Theater.

Just one summer season a shut close friend invited an out-of-town visitor to lunch with us at Joy Younger. We always walked the stairs to the balcony for the reason that the booths on the balcony had curtains which gave us some privateness. The waiter instantly positioned a plate of huge fluffy yeast rolls on the desk. The visitor had in no way been to an American Chinese restaurant and didn’t comprehend the dynamics. There was generally a massive bowl of incredibly hot mustard on the desk accessible for the Chinese food items. My buddy advised his guest that the sizzling mustard was a special delicious butter. The unsuspecting visitor grabbed a warm roll, slathered the incredibly hot mustard around it and took a large chunk. I can even now hear his scream.

Although in large college I labored downtown on the weekends at my dad’s organization. We would often go to lunch collectively. He normally required to try to eat at Morrison’s Cafeteria or John’s Restaurant. When I went to lunch with my mom, she normally chose Britling Cafeteria. But often I was able to persuade one of them to consume at Pleasure Youthful.

In later several years when my spouse and I had compact kids, we would normally go to Joy Young and try to eat on the balcony in one of the private booths. A single time our children snuck out of the booth and begun dropping food on the diners underneath. We didn’t know if we would be authorized again or not.

On the rare occasion when I chose to take in Chinese as an alternative of fried hen, I purchased an egg roll and the ‘Mandarin Special’—chicken chow mein, egg foo young, and rice. I just cannot remember how substantially I paid for the egg roll, but the Mandarin Special at that time was 89 cents.

In accordance to BhamWiki, “Joy Youthful closed its downtown place in the mid 1980′s. Third-technology proprietor Henry Joe reopened in the Brookwood Gallery, a retail strip on the ground ground of the Brookwood Professional medical Centre parking deck wherever it operated for a number of a lot more decades. Pleasure Young ended its existence as a take-out egg roll retail outlet in Pelham.”

These days when I crave a Joy Youthful-type egg roll and the ‘Mandarin Distinctive,’ I select up at Chop Suey Inn on Inexperienced Springs Avenue in Homewood. The egg rolls are extremely very similar to the Pleasure Young’s of my youth and what once was the Joy Young ‘Mandarin Special’ is detailed on the Chop Suey Inn menu as ‘Special Meal Any Time.’
